German fiber broadband provider, Deutsche Glasfaser Group, has unveiled a EUR 7 billion initiative, aiming to triple the number of homes covered by its network.

This expansion strategy involves partnering with Nokia, leveraging their equipment and expertise to achieve high levels of automation. Nokia has been tasked with delivering an innovative nationwide fiber network for Deutsche Glasfaser, which aims to extend its reach beyond the current 2 million homes.

Expanding Connectivity

Deutsche Glafaser will be using Nokia's range of fixed line and IP network solutions, including a system capable of supporting various fiber technologies like GPON, XGS-PON, and 25G PON over the same infrastructure.

This versatility is crucial for Deutsche Glasfaser as it endeavors to extend its services beyond the current 2 million homes it reaches. With Nokia's solutions, the company can cater to diverse needs and preferences, ensuring that both residential and commercial customers benefit from high-speed, reliable internet access.

Furthermore, the adoption of advanced fiber technologies like XGS-PON enables Deutsche Glasfaser to deliver symmetrical broadband speeds of up to 10 Gbps to homes and businesses. This not only enhances the user experience by facilitating seamless streaming, gaming, and telecommuting but also lays the groundwork for future innovations and applications that demand ultra-fast connectivity.

Nokia emphasized that winning the contract involved replacing the IP core, BNG, and edge routers of two competing companies. Additionally, the Finnish company will handle tasks like designing and verifying the network architecture, customizing IP and fixed access domain controllers, and setting up the infrastructure.

Constructing a Highly Automated and Efficient Network

Deutsche Glasfaser's parent companies, EQT and Omers, have pledged EUR 7 billion to the modernization and expansion endeavor. Nokia emphasized that its products will empower the fiber company to construct a highly automated and efficient network, aligning with its ambitious goals.

Pascal Koster, COO of Deutsche Glasfaser, recently announced that they began implementing Nokia's 10 Gbps XGS-PON technology as the new standard across their network. This initiative, launched just last month, is providing high-speed broadband with equal upload and download capabilities to both households and businesses in Neuwied town.

Matthieu Bourguignon, Nokia's SVP and Head of Europe Business in Network Infrastructure, pointed out that Deutsche Glasfaser has been a client since 2017. He described the recent deal as a significant validation, expanding their existing collaboration further into the IP domain.
