Vodafone Business has joined the Linux Foundation's initiative dedicated to establishing open frameworks for edge computing, alongside companies such as AT&T, Arm, Samsung, Huawei, and Intel.

This project aims to advance the industrial internet by fostering collaboration within the LF Edge group, which consists of entities spanning the technology and telecommunications sectors. Its mission is to define standards for a transparent and compatible framework for edge computing.

As a member, Vodafone Business' Product and Platform Engineering Director,  Sampada Basarkar, will take a seat on the group's technical advisory council and governing board.

Advancing the Industrial Internet

Basarkar highlighted in a social media post that the company plans to open-source its current V2X platform, InstantX, as part of its involvement. She mentioned that InstantX offers numerous potential applications utilizing low latency and highly responsive technologies to advance the industrial internet.

InstantX is among four new projects listed by LF Edge, all of which aim to facilitate the real-time exchange and dissemination of data among users via far-edge computing capabilities.

The organization anticipates that InstantX will address challenges related to “asynchronous and instant data exchange across clients” while providing “data for off-line processing and self-learning.”

Vodafone, in announcing its involvement in the group, asserted, “Just as 4G unlocked the consumer mobile internet, the industrial internet will be enabled by programmable 5G standalone networks, edge computing and open APIs.

“Connecting machines and applications with cloud-based AI-powered services will become as commonplace as communicating via social media platforms.”

Streamlining Low-Latency AI Model Deployment

In addition to InstantX, LF Edge's new projects include the identity-based encryption management system, OpenBao, and InfiniEdge AI. InfiniEdge AI seeks to develop an open platform that streamlines the deployment of low-latency AI models on edge devices with limited resources.

By targeting devices with limited resources, InstantX extends the reach of AI applications to a wider range of devices, fostering greater accessibility and scalability. Additionally, the open platform approach promotes collaboration and innovation within the AI community, potentially leading to faster development and adoption of edge computing solutions.
