Vodafone and OXG have officially embarked on a massive fiber optic initiative to revolutionize internet connectivity across Hamburg. Over the coming years, the two partners will independently construct high-speed fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) networks, targeting up to 300,000 households in the northern German port city. Notably, this ambitious project is being carried out without any reliance on public funding.
The project was formally launched on August 28th, with Carsten Brosda, Senator for Culture and Media; Stefan Rüter, Chief Commercial Officer of OXG Glasfaser GmbH; and Michael Jungwirth, a member of Vodafone Germany’s management board, all present to mark the occasion. Construction has already begun in the Wandsbek district, where the first excavators are laying the groundwork for thousands of homes to be connected to the fiber optic network.

Enhancing Quality of Life
Property owners can quickly check if their homes fall within the expansion zone, allowing them to connect to the new network at no cost. This open-access network will also enable other telecommunications companies to offer services such as internet, telephony, and TV over the same infrastructure, providing residents with greater freedom of choice in selecting their service providers.
Michael Jungwirth, from Vodafone Germany‘s management board, emphasized the project’s transformative impact: “Fast and reliable networks significantly enhance quality of life. Today, we launch Hamburg’s largest fiber optic initiative, propelling the city into the digital age. We’re building fiber optics wherever the people of Hamburg need them—whether in single-family homes or large residential buildings housing thousands.”
Stefan Rüter of OXG highlighted the vision driving the project, reiterating that, “Our [OXG] goal is to take a significant step forward in Germany’s digitalization journey. With this fiber optic initiative, we aim to future-proof up to 300,000 households in Hamburg by providing ultra-fast internet as quickly as possible. I’m thrilled that construction is underway, and more districts will soon follow. What sets the OXG expansion apart is that the fiber optic connection is free for homeowners and tenants, and we’re advancing without needing a pre-marketing quota. The OXG network is open to all telecommunications providers, big or small, ensuring residents have a wide range of choices.”
This large-scale FTTH rollout signals a significant leap forward in Hamburg’s digital infrastructure, promising to bring the city closer to its goal of becoming a leading digital hub in Germany.
