Telia Lithuania (Lietuva) Elevates the Countrywide Network

Telia Ciena

Ciena has announced that Telia Lithuania (Lietuva) will use its coherent optics technology to launch the first 800G wavelength service between major cities in the country as part of a nationwide fiber-optic network upgrade.

Telia Lithuania is upgrading its countrywide network to support 400G and higher services with Ciena’s WaveLogic 5 Extreme (WL5e) solution and network management solutions. Ciena claims that the solution enables the telco’s fiber-optic network to provide more flexible, high-capacity, cost-effective, and power-efficient transport services.

Strengthening Telia Lithuania’s Network

According to Virginie Hollebecque, VP of EMEA at Ciena, the solution will strengthen Telia Lithuania’s network by allowing for faster wavelength restoration, issue resolution, and improved timing distribution for applications that require highly reliable synchronization.

“Network resiliency is of great importance for all networks in the Baltic region, considering the region’s heavy reliance on digital technologies,” she said. “Telia Lithuania has a resilient network foundation that can instantly bounce back from any disruptions, minimizing downtime, ensuring service continuity, and safeguarding its communication infrastructure.”

Telia Lithuania’s head of technology, Andrius Šemeškevičius, emphasized the importance of upgrading the network to support bandwidth-intensive applications such as 5G and IoT. As the demand for faster and more reliable connectivity increases, ensuring that the network can accommodate these requirements becomes paramount. By investing in upgrades, Telia Lithuania can not only meet current consumer needs but also prepare for future innovations, enabling seamless emerging technology integration and delivering enhanced services to its customers.

Šemeškevičius said Ciena’s solution “allows us [Telia Lithuania] to reliably and efficiently meet our customers’ varied transport requirements— whether it be for access, metro, long haul, or enterprise data center interconnect.”
