Norwegian telecommunications company, Telenor, has revealed plans to enhance its collaboration with Amazon Web Services (AWS) by bolstering its sovereign cloud capabilities. This initiative involves integrating AWS’ sovereign-by-design technology into Skygard, a forthcoming data center in Oslo.

Skygard is being developed through a partnership between Telenor, renewable energy firm, Hafslund, and investment entity, HitecVision.

During the inaugural year of their partnership, Telenor committed to investing NOK 100 million (approximately USD 9.4 million) into the project.

Leveraging AWS’ advanced technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning (ML), and advanced analytics, Telenor can drive innovation while maintaining compliance. The scalability and flexibility of AWS’ solutions allows Telenor to efficiently manage growing data volumes, optimizing operational resources and potentially reducing costs associated with data storage and processing. Locating the data center in Oslo also ensures lower latency, enhancing the performance and reliability of services for Norwegian customers.

“Telenor is strengthening its collaboration with AWS to power our next wave of growth and innovation,” said Amol Phadke, Telenor’s Executive Vice President and Group Chief Technology Officer in a press release. “Building on our sovereign cloud posture, Telenor will unlock new opportunities to drive value for our customers and wider society,” he continued.

Telenor plans to expand its cloud infrastructure initially across Sweden, with subsequent plans to extend into Finland.

This enhanced collaboration strengthens strategic partnerships, providing Telenor with access to AWS’ extensive expertise in cloud technology and infrastructure. It supports Telenor’s broader digital transformation goals, enabling the development and offering of new, innovative services that drive growth and market expansion.
