Telekom Slovenije is accelerating its 5G network expansion, having recently upgraded more than 1,000 of its base stations. Over the years, the company has seen a steady 33% annual increase in mobile data usage, driven by ongoing modernization efforts and improvements to its 5G infrastructure.
In 2023, Telekom Slovenije invested over EUR 22 million in its mobile network, and has since indicated plans to more than double this investment in 2024. These efforts aim to strengthen the company’s competitive edge by providing secure, reliable, and cutting-edge telecom services that meet current trends and user demands.

With accelerated upgrades underway in 2023 and 2024, Telekom Slovenije expects to modernize nearly two-thirds of its 1,500 base stations. This initiative has already boosted the overall capacity of its mobile network by more than 30%, resulting in a three-fold increase in 5G capacity.
Matjaž Beričič, Network and Infrastructure Director at Telekom Slovenije, highlighted the significance of these efforts, “The modernization and expansion of our 5G network have been progressing rapidly since last year. We are currently in the second phase—the largest in Telekom Slovenije’s history—where we’re intensively upgrading our core, transport, and radio access networks.
“Now, 5G is available in towns with fewer than 1,000 residents, tourist areas, and along the motorway network. Over 200 experts are working daily to maintain our network’s superior quality. In the final phase, we will focus on improving signal quality and increasing data transfer speeds alongside fully renovating the core network.”
Vesna Prodnik, Member of the Management Board for Technology, added, “We are continuously expanding and upgrading our network with the latest technologies, optimizing frequency spectrum usage and energy efficiency. Recently, we have restructured the core network, enhanced the access network, and upgraded back-end equipment while improving base station connectivity. Our network is fully prepared for the ongoing rollout of advanced 5G technologies, ensuring our users benefit from faster, more secure mobile internet with low latency.”
These investments and upgrades position Telekom Slovenije as a leader in 5G innovation, paving the way for enhanced connectivity and user experience across Slovenia.
