Orange Polska Expands Fiber-Optic FTTH Services

Orange Polska has entered into a strategic partnership with Polski Światłowód Otwarty (PŚO) to broaden its fiber-optic Fiber-to-the-Home (FTTH) service coverage in Poland.

This collaboration aims to extend Orange’s services to an additional 120,000 households, building upon the existing 40,000 households currently served through PŚO’s network, which spans nearly 600,000 homes.

This marks the beginning of operator cooperation, with the potential for increased collaboration as Polski Światłowód Otwarty (PŚO) advances its ambitious plans to transition from DOCSIS (Data Over Cable Service Interface Specification) to FTTH and expand its fiber-optic infrastructure.

PŚO’s Ambitious Expansion Plans

Currently, PŚO’s network, which combines FTTH and DOCSIS technologies, covers over 4.1 million households in Poland. The company is set to expand its reach by more than 2 million households by 2028, with a long-term goal of covering more than 6 million households nationwide. Simultaneously, PŚO is upgrading its DOCSIS network to the latest FTTH standard, utilizing XGS-PON (10 Gigabit Symmetrical PON) technology. This will enable all retail operators to offer high-speed, fixed-line internet services, up to 5 Gbps.

Orange Polska’s Fiber-Optic Initiatives

In addition to collaborating with PŚO, Orange Polska has been actively expanding its fiber-optic network through several key initiatives. In April, 2021, the company formed a 50/50 joint venture (JV) with Dutch pension fund, APG, called Światłowód Inwestycje. This venture aims to deploy fiber to an additional 1.7 million households through 2025, focusing on areas with limited access to high-speed broadband. The joint venture is valued at EUR 605 million.

Moreover, in the same year, Orange Polska signed an agreement with regional cable operator, Inea, to gain access to its fiber network, adding 40,000 FTTH connections in the Wielkopolska region. These initiatives are part of Orange Polska’s broader strategy to expand its fiber-optic infrastructure across Poland.

Impact on the Polish Telecommunications Market

These collaborations and investments are set to significantly enhance the availability and quality of fiber-optic services in Poland. By leveraging partnerships with infrastructure providers like PŚO and Inea and forming joint ventures, Orange Polska is positioning itself to meet the growing demand for high-speed internet services across the country.

The ongoing expansion efforts are expected to contribute to Poland’s digital transformation, foster economic growth, and improve connectivity for both urban and rural communities.
