Ogi Secures CCR Funding to Expand South Wales Fiber Network

Ogi Cardiff Capital Region

Ogi, an alternative telecoms provider in Wales, has obtained GBP 45 million in funding from the Cardiff Capital Region (CCR) to advance the next phases of its fiber expansion.

Established in 2017, the CCR is a coalition of ten local councils in southeast Wales that invests in projects designed to generate employment and enhance essential infrastructure throughout the region.

Economical Network Expansion

The new funding package will enable Ogi to extend its network across the ten local authority areas of the Cardiff Capital Region—Blaenau Gwent, Bridgend, Caerphilly, Cardiff, Merthyr Tydfil, Monmouthshire, Newport, Rhondda Cynon Taf, Torfaen, and the Vale of Glamorgan—where it already operates.

From an economical perspective, the Cardiff Capital Region (CCR) encompasses Ogi’s high-capacity network, which extends across the south Wales trunk road into England. This infrastructure, designed to meet the rising demand for cloud computing, AI, and data storage, supports sectors such as fintech and creative industries. It also enhances Wales’s attractiveness to data center operators, mobile carriers, and hyperscalers.

“With key strategic sites like Aberthaw to the south and the heads of the valleys to the north, there’s massive potential across the capital region, and partnering with CCR at such an exciting time in their own development is the next logical step for Ogi’s growth in southeast Wales,” said, Ogi’s CEO, Ben Allwright in the announcement.

An Era of Regeneration

Councillor Mary Ann Brocklesby remarked that Ogi’s initial investment has elevated regeneration efforts by connecting communities throughout the Cardiff Capital Region and beyond with new possibilities.

“Our investment into Ogi recognizes [the] ongoing commitment to boosting the region, and the work already being done to bring vital connectivity to some of Wales’s biggest towns and villages,” continued Brocklesby.

The exact number of new premises to be covered as a result of this funding was not revealed. The specific number of new premises to benefit from this funding has not been disclosed.

Since obtaining its initial funding from Infracapital in 2021, Ogi has delivered fiber-to-the-premises to 100,000 locations in south Wales, with one in five of these sites now registered as customers.
