Nokia and OTE Set New Long-Distance Fiber Speed Records

Nokia and Ote

Nokia and Greek telecom operator, OTE, have set new benchmarks in long-distance fiber transmission speeds. The duo achieved record-breaking data rates in a groundbreaking field trial using OTE’s national dense wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM) network and Nokia’s 1830 PSI-M optical transport solution.

The trial, which spanned the Grecian landscape, saw the companies reach 800 Gbps on a single channel over 2,580 km and 900 Gbps over 1,290 km—both of which claim to be new world records. Additionally, they demonstrated an impressive 1.2 Tbps transmission on a single channel over 255 km.

DWDM Network Sets Global Standard

Michalis Papamichail, OTE Group Technology Strategy Director, highlighted the role of their national DWDM network, stating, “Our national DWDM network has now set a global standard for performance. This achievement underscores our commitment to delivering cutting-edge, cost-effective network solutions. We are excited to continue pushing the boundaries of DWDM technology with Nokia.”

James Watt, Vice President and General Manager for the Optical Networks Division at Nokia, praised the collaboration, noting, “Achieving these world records with OTE is a significant milestone. Our joint efforts are helping meet the growing demands of digital services, such as social media, cloud computing, and video streaming.”

The trial involved installing optical nodes in Patra and Athens, utilizing Nokia’s sixth-generation Photonic Service Engines (PSE-6s). Despite the impressive results, the exact distances covered were inconclusive. This ambiguity arose due to the relatively close geographical proximity of the nodes.

While Watt emphasized the importance of OTE’s role, the trial highlighted the advancements in Nokia’s optical technology. This latest success, built on previous records set in Japan and the Atlantic Ocean, showcased Nokia’s pioneering role in the evolution of super-coherent optical transmission systems.
