Following these results, the company is set to begin phasing out its 3G network in early 2025 to prioritize enhanced 4G services.

The initial phase of the 3G shutdown will affect specific areas, including Lviv, the Lviv region, Zhovkva, and Vynnyky, where the network will be deactivated on February 25, 2025. In Smila, the 3G network will be turned off earlier, on January 28, 2025. This transition aims to bolster 4G connectivity and provide a superior mobile internet experience in these regions.

“The gradual phase-out of 3G technology is a multi-year project that is of great importance for the entire electronic communications industry as it not only improves the customer experience and increases the speed of 4G but also prepares the network for the launch of 5G technology in Ukraine. And this can be implemented by freeing up frequencies from outdated technologies, such as 3G,” the company said.

The global shift from 3G to 4G networks continues to gain momentum, with 56% of European mobile operators having already discontinued 3G services. An additional 42% are expected to follow suit by the end of 2025. Kyivstar aligns with this trend, as only 5% of its subscriber base currently rely on 3G technology.

Subscribers who have yet to upgrade to 4G will still be able to make calls, send SMS’, and access other mobile services after the 3G shutdown, ensuring uninterrupted connectivity despite the transition.
