EE Launches UK’s First 5G Standalone Network and Wi-Fi 7 for Homes

EE

EE has officially launched the UK’s newest mobile network, introducing 5G standalone (5G SA) technology across 15 major cities. Leveraging over a decade of mobile leadership and innovation through the BT Group, EE’s new 5G SA has set a groundbreaking standard in connectivity, offering superior performance to users both indoors and outdoors, with improved coverage and speed.

Alongside this, EE unveiled its latest home broadband solutions—the Smart Hub Pro and Smart WiFi Pro—making the UK one of the first countries to experience WiFi 7. These new technologies are designed to meet the growing demand for connected homes, providing faster speeds, enhanced gaming, AR/VR support, and 4K/8K streaming.

A New Era of Connectivity

The launch of EE’s 5G SA network delivers significant benefits from day one. For the first time in the UK, customers in cities with the network will enjoy nearly uninterrupted outdoor coverage, ensuring reliable data usage and call connectivity, even in previously hard-to-reach areas. This will also improve gaming and video streaming experiences, while boasting some of the fastest mobile speeds available today.

A standout feature of this new network is its AI-powered efficiency. EE is leveraging automation and machine learning (ML) to reduce energy consumption by automatically placing mobile cells into sleep mode when they aren’t needed. This marks a significant step forward in eco-friendly mobile technology.

EE’s 5G SA will also serve as the backbone for future AI services, seamlessly connecting to the cloud for optimal performance and creating the foundation for AI-driven applications in everyday life.

5G and the Introduction of WiFi 7

Moreover, EE’s “Network Boost” feature (exclusive to specific tariffs) will enhance performance in high-traffic areas by allocating more capacity to users, ensuring top-tier performance even when the network is congested.

The new 5G SA and Network Boost features will be included in EE’s new “All Rounder” and “Full Works” plans, bringing back EU roaming at no additional cost. The “Full Works” plan also includes the Roam Further Pass, extending roaming benefits to the USA, Australia, Canada, Mexico, and New Zealand.

In partnership with Google, EE will provide customers with access to Google One AI Premium through the Full Works plan. This plan offers AI-powered tools for tackling complex projects, demonstrating a global-first for mobile plans.

EE has also collaborated with Qualcomm Technologies to introduce WiFi 7 to its home broadband service. Qualcomm’s advanced networking platforms will power the new Smart Hub Pro and Smart WiFi Pro, delivering unparalleled speeds and performance for EE’s full-fiber customers. This next-gen WiFi solution will support more devices simultaneously and is designed for cloud gaming, AR/VR, and ultra-high-definition (UHD) streaming.

The Smart Hub Pro and Smart WiFi Pro will be available with select full-fiber packages and can be added to existing plans.

Marc Allera, CEO of EE, emphasized the transformative potential of these new network capabilities, stating, “Today, EE is launching UK firsts in network capabilities designed to unleash the huge potential of a wave of AI-powered devices. 5G standalone is a new mobile network giving enhanced performance to customers from day one and unlocks game-changing new services of the future. It’s been built to handle the growing range of AI-powered devices, from smartphones to laptops, tablets, and more. WiFi 7 for the home is another first for EE customers, giving households higher speeds and better capacity to support devices in every corner of their home.”
