Ofcom Approves Amazon’s Project Kuiper for UK Internet Services

Ofcom has issued an Earth station network license to Amazon for its non-geostationary orbit (NGSO) satellite system, Project Kuiper, allowing the company to provide internet services across the United Kingdom (UK).

Amazon is developing Project Kuiper to address the global demand for high-speed, low-latency broadband, aiming to deliver reliable and affordable connectivity to underserved communities worldwide. With Ofcom’s approval, the UK will be among the first countries to access the service once it becomes operational, bringing Amazon closer to its goal of expanding internet coverage to more households, businesses, and communities.

“We share Ofcom’s goal of making reliable, affordable broadband available for everyone, and we appreciate the agency’s support as we prepare for a full-scale deployment of our satellite constellation,” said Nina Beebe, Kuiper Regulatory Senior Lead for EMEA. “There are still too many places in the UK where broadband access is unreliable or where it doesn’t exist at all, and LEO systems like Project Kuiper can play an important role in helping connect those beyond the reach of existing networks. We’re proud to do our part to help connect customers and communities across the country.”

Amazon’s Project Kuiper is a high-performance satellite broadband network designed to provide global connectivity by integrating satellites with customer terminals, ground gateways, and robust global infrastructure.

The system is engineered to deliver reliable internet access to tens of millions of users, including households, businesses, schools, hospitals, and government agencies in areas beyond the reach of traditional fiber or wireless networks.

Amazon aims to begin offering Project Kuiper’s broadband services to customers later this year.
