Vertiv has launched Dynamic Grid Support integration into the operations of Conapto, a leading Swedish colocation provider, in collaboration with Fever Energy, a notable grid support solutions provider. Utilizing Vertiv’s Liebert EXL S1, an advanced Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) system, this innovative partnership aims to enhance sustainability by maximizing UPS energy efficiency and reducing CO2 emissions through the use of alternative energy sources.
As digitalization accelerates the growth of Sweden’s digital infrastructure, there is an increased demand for stable, reliable, and sustainable power sources. Recognizing this need, Vertiv, Conapto, and Fever Energy have collaborated to provide data centers with the opportunity to actively contribute to grid stabilization while also unlocking new revenue streams.
Ensuring Grid Stability
The UPS includes an inventive Dynamic Grid Support feature, enabling Conapto to play an active role in ensuring grid stability by engaging in fast frequency response (FFR) and meeting demand for frequency containment reserve (FCR-D). Vertiv’s solution optimizes UPS capacity and uses lithium-ion battery storage to provide power support during peak utility demand without requiring major infrastructure changes.
The UPS contributes to grid stability and efficient resource utilization by providing static and dynamic frequency regulation, as well as demand management capabilities, thereby facilitating the integration of alternative sources such as wind, water, and solar into the energy ecosystem.
Conapto chose the Vertiv™ Liebert® EXL S1 UPS system for its energy-saving features over less efficient alternatives. This innovative solution, powered by lithium-ion battery technology, provides high capacity with a small footprint, allowing data centers to maximize the number of racks and servers, while also achieving up to 99% operational efficiency.
The collaborative effort will unfold in two primary stages. Initially, existing Conapto installations acquired in 2022 will undergo optimization for grid support, featuring UPS units tailored for seamless integration into the system by end users. Subsequently, the identical solution will be deployed at Conapto’s Stockholm 4 South facilities, enhancing grid support capacity and resilience.
Enhancing Data Center Operational Efficiency
Karsten Winther, President, Vertiv Europe, Middle East and Africa, shared, “The collaboration between Vertiv, Conapto and Fever Energy represents a significant milestone in the data center industry, and builds on our own 15-year partnership with Conapto. With the introduction of Dynamic Grid Support, we are empowering Conapto to not only enhance operational efficiency in its data centers, but also contribute to grid stability and sustainability when paired with energy alternatives, marking a significant step forward in the evolution of critical digital infrastructure.”
Stefan Nilsson, Chief Commercial Officer, Conapto, said, “In line with Conapto’s commitment to sustainability and societal contribution, we believe that data centers should not only consume energy but also play an active role in supporting the grid. By introducing Dynamic Grid Support, we can help reduce Co2 emissions by enabling more renewables to be added to the energy mix. We can also generate new capacity for our customers and deploy it much faster. Our partnership with Vertiv and Fever Energy is testament to this ethos as we work towards creating a more resilient and sustainable digital infrastructure for Sweden and beyond.”
