Mila, Iceland’s leading telecommunications provider, has chosen Nokia to upgrade its fiber network and provide new multi-gigabit services to over 60,000 customers across the country.
Nokia’s multi-PON solution will be deployed in Reykjavik first before being expanded to other cities and regions. Mila has built a vast access network that connects nearly every business and household in the country. Currently, 1Gb/s internet services are available in more than 90% of the homes. However, the rise of enterprise applications, gaming, homeworking and the digital economy is driving demand for new multi-gigabit services.
By utilizing Nokia’s multi-PON fiber broadband solution, Mila will create a network that is prepared for the future and able to meet the increasing demand from customers for more capacity and improved broadband services. In 2024, the deployment will reportedly be complete, including the upgrading of current Nokia fiber access nodes and optical line terminals.
The Quillion chipset powers Nokia’s fiber access solution, which currently supports three generations of PON technologies, including GPON, XGS-PON and 25G PON. With Nokia’s Quillion chipset at the heart of the solution, Mila will be able to easily upgrade its network to the next-generation PON technology when it wants to add more capacity. It will also assist Mila in reducing its power consumption by 50% and establishing a smaller carbon footprint as a result of energy efficiency gains that help reduce operational expenses.
