In an exclusive interview with Telecom Review during the 18th edition of the Telecom Review Leaders’ Summit, Per Beming, Chief Standardization Officer at Ericsson, discussed how the company is leveraging AI and automation to address customer challenges, contribute to global digital transformation, and advance network technology standards.
How is Ericsson leveraging AI and automation to address customer challenges?
We have incorporated a lot of AI at Ericsson and we are using it for our own development. Our developers are using TTP-type solutions to make better products. We are also integrating a real-time artificial intelligence (AI) algorithm into the products we’re providing to our customers, enabling them to make faster and better real-time decisions.
We’re also implementing slower, non-real-time network optimization based on AI that previously used a lot of manpower, such as cells in mobile networks that did not filter any traffic. This used to be very difficult to implement, however, AI has helped a lot. The mobile network provides fantastic connectivity so that AI use cases can bridge our customers with their customers, allowing for the incorporation of AI into phones and other things.
How is Ericsson contributing to advancing global digital transformation, and what initiatives are being implemented to support this journey?
AI is a fundamental part of digital transformation, with mobile networks enabling it. It is one of the keys to enabling global developers to gain access to the mobile network through network APIs. Together with 12 world-famous CSPs/operators, we created a company that supports the development of network APIs across the developer community. Having access to these APIs will help program the network so it can perform at its best.
To enable digital transformation in the future, we need to have programmable, reliable, high-performing networks, otherwise, we will not be able to achieve the desired digital transformation.
With 5G-Advanced on the horizon, how is Ericsson contributing to the development of its standards?
Ericsson has been a leader in the standardization of 5G and 5G-Advanced (5G-A). We worked for five years on the standardization of 5G-A.
As we approach the conclusion of 5G-A standardization and begin with 6G standardization, we need to talk about the digital transformation of society so that we can achieve our objectives effectively. Network APIs also need to be addressed, although, in this domain, we have the support of AI.
AI will help those who are better app developers than Ericsson to innovate on top of the network. This will help us provide a nice, innovative platform for the world.
